Story about Ranko Mijatović – Šarac as a symbol of the war generation with a clear post-traumatic disorder.
After the civil war, people of the former Yugoslav Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina remained to live together, though in separate entities. The number of victims has not been confirmed still. Tragedies and dramas of common people continued even after the war.
Ranko Mijatović – Šarac is a symbol of the war generation with a clear post-traumatic disorder. Time does not pass, and conflict is eternal. Once shared ideals now cease to exist. Even to Šarac. Living in constant fear and fighting the never-ending battle with PTSD left him unaware of present and uninterested in the future.
Šarac is a mythological creature in Serbian literature, a horse with unearthly powers that served Marko Kraljević, one of the most prominent epic characters in the Serbian folklore. But Ranko Mijatović did not get his nickname after a horse with superpowers. In his childhood he was one of the best marble players in the village. As a winner, he collected different marbles and most of them were taws. Hence the nickname – Šarac*.
